It was invented in 1974 by 29-year-old Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor Erno Rubik (hence, the name Rubik’s Cube), when his country was under Soviet domination.

Rubik’s Cube is a Communist Block

Originally, it was made out of good old proletarian wood instead of flashy capitalist plastic. The corners were rounded.

The puzzle is so hard, its own inventor couldn’t solve it.

It took Erno Rubik one month to solve the cube. Current World Record is 5.55 Seconds.

Rubik, who built the cube explained 3-D geometry to his students, marveled at how playing with the puzzle and putting the colors in seemingly random order. It was like “staring at a piece of writing, written in a secret code.

More than 350 million cubes have been sold.

Rubik called it the “Magic Cube”. It didn’t take off until he licensed it to Ideal Toy Co. in 1980. From that moment, Rubik’s Cube sold 100 million units within three years and became an ’80s icon.

As many as one out of seven citizens of Earth has tried to solve it.

That’s a billion people.  But that’s not the truly mind-blowing number, which is this: The puzzle has ‘519’ quintillion possible combinations. That’s 519,000,000,000,000,000,000. That number is even higher than the number of times Alec Baldwin has lost his temper in public. It wasn’t invented in one day, but they chose the 519 number (May 19) to honor its 60th birthday.

A guide to solving the cube became a best seller.

A 12-year-old English schoolboy, Patrick Bossert, published, “You Can Do the Cube,” a foolproof guide to working out the puzzle. It sold 1.5 million copies.

The puzzle even had its own (Short-Lived) TV show

“Rubik: The Amazing Cube” aired on ABC.  The voice of the cube was provided by the late Ron Palillo and featured a theme song by Menudo. (Best thing to happen to Kids wanting to solve Rubik’s Cube)

And there’s a museum exhibit, too
